The Reason We Need an Investigation

Next week Barack Obama will become the 44th President of the United States.  After the cheers have died, the bands have gone quiet, and the dance floors emptied there will be a few things the new President needs to focus on.  The first is our economy, which is in the crapper.  I'm not an economist and I don't try to pretend I am.  So, good luck with that.

Another focus for the new President will be the former President.  George W. Bush and his administration endorsed and directed the use of torture against "illegal combatants" at Guantanimo Bay.  I believe that's true.  And that's why I shouldn't be the special investigator.  But one needs to be appointed.  

And if evidence of torture and White House complicity and exuberance are uncovered then President Obama needs to hold President Bush to account.  If that means a war crimes trial in the Hague then so be it.  If it means a criminal trial here in the United States then so be it.

We're better people than those who attacked us on 9-11.  We need to prove that.  To ourselves, and to the rest of the world.  We're better.  We need to live up to the idea that no one is above the law.  NO ONE.  Not even a President.
