Caucus Scandal Reborn

I found a posting on WisPolitics by Greg Bump dated February 24, 2006. In the post he reports that Kacy Hack, a former graphic artist for the Assembly Republican Caucus who testified at length in the hearings, did testify that she did graphics work/design for then candidate Terri McCormick.

Here is a transcript of the exchange between Hack and the prosecutor: (emphasis mine)

Prosecutor: Did you do any work for special elections?
Hack: Yes
Prosecutor: Do you remember doing any work in the -- not saying these are special elections, just the elections -- of Don Friske?
Hack: Yes
Prosecutor: Terri McCormick?
Hack: Yes
Prosecutor: Are those non-incumbents?
Hack: They were at the time.

McCormick's then campaign manager denied that she had ever used the graphic services of the Caucus. Of course, that campaign manager (Tracy Mangold) was not under oath while Kacy Hack was.

I was not required to be under oath when I provided that statement. While I am not a fan of Terri McCormick any longer, the situation was that the graphic artist provided graphics to certain people at that time without being asked to do the work. Obviously she could testify truthfully that she provided graphics to these people if that were the case.

While I was not working for Terri when this situation supposedly occurred, I provided a statement on behalf of my candidate that was in my estimation the truth as she so declared. So I did NOT lie or give a false statement. I acted accordingly as any campaign manager would on behalf of their candidate.

If I KNEW this to be a falsehood and that the graphic artist did in fact provide graphics to Terri at her request, I would NOT lie on behalf of my candidate because that is not who I am or what I do. Just wanted to clarify MY position regarding this situation.

I fully realize that you were not required to be under oath. My statement was a matter of fact, not so much a statement of opinion. I'm sorry if that didn't come across. Looking back at it I probably could have phrased it differently.

And I wasn't trying to insinuate anything about you personally or professionally. I've worked campaigns as well and know that campaign staff are at the mercy of whomever is signing the checks usually. I've found that my frustrations with Democratic candidates are mirrored in my Republican friends with Republican candidates. Two sides of the same coin.

Consider your position clarified and understood and empathized with. Send me an email sometime and we can swap war stories from the trail. I always love hearing about the same kind of crap that's happening on the other side as it is on this side.

Hey - thanks for the reply. I didn't mean to sound snide in my comment. I have bad memories of that campaign. I would like to hear your stories too. Not sure where to send an email though...
I think the most frustrating thing for me - is that if I believe in someone, I will "lay down on the tracks" for them. It is horrifying when you realize they aren't who you were hoping they would be.
